Outdoor Usage of Digital signage
Digital signage can cause some problems when used in the outdoor environment. However, modern methods of protection ensure that this technology can be used even in the glaring sun without any problem.
Traditionally, LED’s are used more commonly in the outside environment for any kind of display. This is done so that the screens are visible even during the night hours. But this may cause problems during the day. The extra shine of the LED screen may dazzle the eyes of a viewer at day time because of the sun. So when a business owner is using a promotional feature in the outdoors, they should be well aware and take into account all the aspects.
The glaring sun may be a cause of worry for any kind of outdoor promotion. If the screen faces direct sunlight it is quite possible that the entire view of the screen gets completely blurred. The brightness of the screen will get faded by the glaring sun. The screen would reflect the rays of the sun and as a result the person looking at the screen will not be able to see anything on it. Thus you stand to lose a number of potential customers.
But these problems do not mean that you will not be able to use the digital signage media during the day. If you take proper precaution, you can successfully convey your message using this very technology even at broad daylight. What you require to do is use an anti-glare screen, so that you can be sure that the brightness of the sun will not mask the brightness of your ad screen. However, this would not be totally sufficient. If you want your potential customers to read the message on the screen, you need to place the screen in an angle that it does not face the sun directly.
Innovation in LCD screens has today given us the backlit LCD screens and the trans-reflective screens. These two types of LCD screens are manufactured to reflect the sun’s ray back in such a way that the light is used an amplifier and the screen becomes more visible to those viewing it. Due to this modern technology introduced in the LCD screen, they can be used in the outdoor environment without much hassle.
The feature which makes the screen visible even in broad daylight is the amount of brightness that can be absorbed by these screens. Generally the capacity of brightness of a normal LCD screen is around 500-800 nits/candelas. Those which are of a higher capacity can absorb brightness almost three times the capacity of the normal ones.
At the same time it should be remembered that having a capacity to withstand brightness is not enough for an LCD screen. Using digital signage in an outdoor environment also requires the screens to have the capacity of temperature resistance. Anti-vandal protection is another important thing which needs to be considered.
To make the technology more easy and cost-effective, the most common thing you can do is to use a high-brightness TV inside an outdoor LCD enclosure.
